Firefox causes 100% CPU usage on Mac OS X

I’ve been attempting to run down the cause of my iMac being constantly at 100% CPU.

Here’s part of the cause:

Clicking anywhere in a Firefox browser window pegs the CPU usage to 100%.
Using 10.4.8 and Firefox 1.5.0.8, I can still reproduce this ugly bug.
