Mandelbulb 3D parameter experiments: Set 2 of 3

This is the second part of a series of variations on one Mandelbulb 3D image.

The full set of variations is displayed below. All of these use Amazing Box, [something], Folding Int Pow, and ABoxVaryScale4d formulas with identical parameters, except for the second position which is filled in by whichever formula I was testing at the moment. The results of these experiments are yours to use and improve on. I usually tried one or two variations for each formula. There are plenty of interesting bits to explore throughout these images, far too many for me to ever do justice to all the possibilities. They also may give you an idea of what the different transformations can do.

Mandelbulb 3D parameter experiments: Set 1 of 3

Last night, starting with this Mandelbulb 3D file, I spent a few hours experimenting with substituting different formulas in one position, holding all other parameters the same.

The results of these experiments are yours to use and expand on. There are one or two variations for each formula. There are plenty of interesting bits to explore in these images, far too many for me to ever do justice to all the possibilities. The images below also may give you an idea of what the different transformations can do. Mouse-over each image to see the filename.

All of these use Amazing Box, ___, Folding Int Pow, and ABoxVaryScale4d formulas with identical parameters, except for the blank which is filled in by whichever formula I was testing at the moment.

Mandelbulb 3D Light collection

Many artists are publishing their parameters for their Mandelbulb 3D works, myself included. But sometimes it’s more convenient just to have the lighting they use because that is one of the hardest parts to learn when you are just starting out. Here’s a collection of lighting settings. Note: the names may not be indicative of what you get, but you will get a variety of colors and lighting settings that aren’t in the default set.

Create photo-illustration effects with Photoshop

I’ve been experimenting with enhancing some of my photos in Photoshop to create more interesting images. I use a Canon PowerShot SD 990IS point-and-shoot camera that does a good job on the whole, but because the lens isn’t very high quality, images sometimes come out somewhat hazy. The camera actually captures a lot of detail but it takes some processing to bring it out. I’m not against using some tricks to emphasize what’s good about the picture, even to the point where it crosses the line into illustration.

For this project, I started with a fairly unexciting picture of my dining room. Its one strong point was the sunlight streaming in the windows which brought out the colors in the wood chair and tablecloth. This picture was one of several shots of the same scene with different exposure settings.

This was the lightest one, chosen for the detail visible through the windows. However in choosing the lightest exposure, the tablecloth lost a lot of its color. However I thought it had potential.

Using toggle javascripts to build an FAQ page.

FAQ pages are sometimes requested in our learning modules so we’ve built in the scripts to create an easy- to-read, easy-to-use FAQ by applying simple CSS classes to elements on the page. When the FAQ page loads, all the questions appear in a collapsed view which can be quickly scanned.

On clicking any question, its associated answer expands and pushes the rest of the questions down. When another question is clicked, the first answer closes and the new answer opens up.

Here’s how to add this type of FAQ to your own HTML pages.

  2. Betterfonts.com

This site has both free and paid fonts. The free fonts tend toward the oddball, not the type of font you can use daily, but interesting. The paid fonts are very reasonably priced at $4.99, and you can download their top 500 for $2.77.

An Actionscript 3 Drag and Drop Medical Treasure Hunt Game

This game is a framework to create a simulation of a crash cart in a hospital. A crash cart is a red metal tool cart with 6 drawers, filled with the items used by the Cardiac Arrest team to save people’s lives when they have a cardiac arrest. Speed is of the essence in an arrest, so the people on the team need to know exactly where each item is in the drawers. The goal of this game is to help train team members to find the items they need.

An item to be found is randomly chosen, and the player clicks on a drawer and looks through the items to find the one they are looking for. When it is found, they drag the item to the target (which will probably be animated and a whole lot cooler looking in the final game. If they get it right, they get positive feedback of some sort and another item is chosen. If not, the item pops back to its last position before the drag and they get another chance to find the correct item.
