Over the last few days Mail.app started refusing to send my emails from any of my email accounts. I use only one smtp server for all the accounts: smtp.att.yahoo.com, on port 25 with non SSL authentication.
The solution that worked for me was to simply replace the "att" in the mail server name with "mail". It seems that some of the machines that are used behind the dns name smtp.att.yahoo.com started having this problem, but not all: the server smtp.mail.yahoo.com is still OK.
Thanks to Steve McGarrett for this solution.

Thanks -- that would explain why I had to hit "send" 4 or 5 times before it worked. So far now it's working every time.
i am reciving following error:
The server rejected the sender address. The server response was: 530 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first. a4sm731935tib.4
same problem comes to me.
The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's e-mail address. The sender's e-mail address was 'babymatch2009@gmail.com'. Subject 'Re: Moto match - spec', Account: 'pop.gmail.com', Server: 'smtp.gmail.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '530 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first. c20sm12867748rvf.40', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 530, Error Number: 0x800CCC78
Thanks for the fix! It's sad that Yahoo!/AT&T support can't provide us this information.
You need to login to your yahoo mail account (with the att email login)
Go to OPTIONS once logged in
Then go to ACCOUNTS
Then ADD OR EDIT ACCOUNTS
then add the email you wish to send and receive from. Follow the instructions for verifying your email address.
The address needs to clear with ATT before you cab send from it. Spam thing.
I ma developing a ASP.net application for sending mail using smtp.gamil.server. but, i received a error 'The server rejected the sender address. The server response was: 530 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first. 23sm1382187iwn.3 '
can anyone halp me to resolve this.
Advance Thanks
This worked for me.
Go to Settings > Mail,Contacts,Calender > 'Your email account' > SMTP > Primary Server 'smtp.live.com > Then enter your email address in the username spot (Full email address) and password (email password) click done, Verifies and your done.
hopefully that works for you as it did for me. Cheers.
After working, unsuccessfully, with a couple of tech people from my ISP the problem was finally resolved when I talked with an Apple tech. Initially I didn't know if it was AT&T, my ISP or Apple. The simple solution for me ended up being a "network reset" on your iPhone. I first had to delete the email addresses that I couldn't send email from then I performed the reset. After that I went and entered my email info and the problem is fixed. Side note: Its a good idea to take screen shots of your mail settings before you delete the mail accounts.
I've had this issue come up several times with my clients' who use iphones. In these cases, the user mistakenly chose to enter an SMTP server other than the default AT&T SMTP server. I've solved it every time by using the AT&T SMTP Server, which is host name cwmx.com, then doing a hard reset (hold the home and sleep buttons together until the iPhone turns off, then hold the sleep button alone until the iPhone powers back on). Without fail, this has resolved the problem every time. Of course, this pushes all your outgoing email through the AT&T SMTP servers, so if you have a specific reason for needing to use a different SMTP server, then this solution is not for you.
