iPod Freeze

If your iPod freezes up, as mine did several times before dying completely, follow these instructions:

To reset iPod mini, iPod mini (Second Generation), iPod photo, and iPod (Click Wheel)

Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
[note: this is the tip that got it unfrozen for me]

If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.

To Apple's credit, they replaced the dead iPod immediately, for free.

Needless to say I am purchasing the extended warranty. This is one case where it may be worth it.

UPDATE! If the steps above did not help, take a look at this page:

My 8Gig Nano has frozen a few times ,usually following a sudden removal of the iTrip or too many button presses in too short a time.

This tip here always works.

Posted by: Chris on December 7, 2007 4:20 AM

Thanks alot. I was freaked out because it got slower and slower and then froze completely. I didn't know what was wrong. How did you know about that bizzare restart sequence?

Posted by: Platinum on December 25, 2007 3:27 PM

How do you freze your ipod?(so i can prevent it )

Posted by: Bob on December 27, 2007 8:30 PM

WTF?
As soon as I did this to my freezing ipod it completely died.

Posted by: me on January 1, 2008 4:10 PM

wow this is the most obvious answer to Ipod freezing. If this doesnt work its going to die as mine has. The 5 R's are the easiest way to fix it. Its all over the internet and apple.com

this guy isnt that smart but if you think cutting and pasting is then u must be that dumb your self.

Posted by: jdhfjkhdsf on February 22, 2008 1:08 AM

thankyou,thankyou.....I thought I should try your idea instead of the usual, fix it with a hammer approach. Ipod man your the best!

Posted by: Jules on March 4, 2008 10:35 PM

Wow! This really rocks! I was scared because at first I thought that I was going to have to restore my Ipod, which meant that I was going to have to delete all of my stuff off of there, which would have sucked. But, when I did that, it was like awesome! Thanks so much for the tip!! :-)

WOW!! if anyone feels like there is no hope left and they can't think of a feasible, possible answer to why their ipod is acting stupid, THE ADVICE REALLY WORKS! i was reading all of the comments and feeling like i wouldn't be able to listen to my ipod on a long plane ride... i felt pretty crappy (as technology can always make you feel). although, by pressing the menu button and the center button at the same time, it reset it. my screen was saying "do not disconnect" even though nothing was plugged in, and nothing was working.... THANK YOU SOOO MUCH

Posted by: G.I on April 9, 2008 11:46 PM

Posted by: Adam on June 10, 2008 12:32 PM

Thank you so much! I owe you my life. I used to just wait for the battery to die but now I don't have to. Thanks again!

Posted by: Ava on June 14, 2008 5:54 PM

This is my very first iPod and I've only had it a few months, but this is the first time it ever froze on me. I almost freaked out (well, I did a little) because I had no idea what was going on and had a nightmare thinking about having to have it replaced and all of that (although I did get an extended warranty, going through replacing it would be so annoying)

Anyway, your page is what popped up on google first and oh my gosh, I can't believe it worked! I tried everything, including plugging it into an outlet and nothing happened but your directions were so clear cut. I couldn't believe it was that easy to unfreeze. Thank you so much! I will save this for future reference incase I forget and it happens again. :)
