- With any interface, patients should not eat or drink while wearing the device to reduce the risk of aspiration.
- Remove the device immediately should vomiting or aspiration occur.
- If abdominal distention occurs, remove device and allow patient to expell air.
- Patients are encouraged to use their own interface while on inpatient units for best fit, comfort and proper seal.
- Interface must be positioned properly to prevent air leaks and to function properly.
- Air leaks indicate a poor seal and occur when mask is improperly positioned, placed over a nasogastric feeding tube, or facial hair.
- Readjust chin strap, mask straps, evaluate mask size to achieve proper fit.
